Food photography is a highly specialized form of commercial still life photography. Photographing foods and beverages creates
unique challenges for photographers. Often the most important goal of the final photograph is to depict the food or beverage
in as most an appealing light as possible.
The process often begins with a food stylist. A
simple arrangement of food is usually not pleasing enough to the eye to make the
food appear appealing in a stock photo. Professional food stylists are artists who arrange the food to project the aromas
and tastes of the food into the camera view finder. Many food stylists are chefs with an intimate knowledge of the foods
they are arranging for the final stock image.
Creating an appealing stock photo of a food or beverage requires strong knowledge and expertise in lighting. Lighting from the
side or the back of the food is a popular method for enhancing the contrast and texture of the food. However the result is often
an image with long or harsh shadows caused by the light failing to penetrate the food item from the back or side. The shadows often
make the food look unappealing and provide a distraction to the viewer, and hence a royalty free stock photo which is not likely
to be in high demand.
Complex lighting setups are required to create the best food and beverage stock photos. Front lighting with a soft box is often
utilized. Multiple small mirrors are also used to reflect the back or side light. Both light sources fill in the shadows, while
the mirrors can provide a speckling of light on the food item. This adds to its appeal.
The final food stock image should present the food or beverage item in the most appealing light, capturing the food item in
sharp focus while keeping the distracting items out of the picture, or out of focus. As is displayed in this simple yet pleasing
composition of red cherries from Jane Rix,
we can tell a story with a food item in a royalty free stock photo and leave room for multiple potential uses for the image.
