For several years Hilton Head Island in South Carolina has been our family’s favorite
vacation spot. Not as touristy as many of the well known beaches of the southeastern United States, and with a much slower pace than the theme parks, Hilton Head is a vacation worth discovering.
Nestled along the southeastern edge of South Carolina, a mere 20 miles north of Savannah, Georgia, Hilton Head Island has 12 miles of pristine beaches. Summer temperatures tend not to be nearly as extreme as the inland areas of South Carolina, due to the moderation of the air from the ocean breeze. Highs generally top out in the upper 80s to near 90 in the summer, whereas Orlando hits the mid 90s and areas of central South Carolina can push 100 at times.
Coligny Beach is a beautiful beach for playing in the sand, biking, and swimming in the warm ocean waters which are typically in the low 80s during the summer. Bordering the beach is Coligny Plaza, a shopping and dining destination for locals and tourists alike.
Love golf? Golf Digest ranked Hilton Head Island #10 in the world for top golf resorts. The famous Harbour Town Golf Links hosts The Heritage PGA tour event. Enjoy theater? The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina boasts Broadway-quality plays. Trails abound across the island, perfect for biking and hiking at your own pace. And if you love dogs, Hilton Head loves them even more. There are more dog friendly destinations than you could care to count, including select restaurants with dog menus so Rufus can eat a fine meal with the family.
My favorite activity on Hilton Head Island is doing absolutely nothing. Whether it is taking a swim in the ocean, or at any of the beautiful hotels and resorts across the island, or reading a good book while catching some rays… Hilton Head is synonymous with relaxation. Check it out. You will be glad you did.
