On February 2nd 2013, a large group of artists and photographers will be deactivating their photos and images at iStockphoto. The movement began on the Microstockgroup forums, in a message board thread which as of today has been read 12,000 times. There is also a call for many artists exclusive to iStockphoto to give up their exclusivity and become “free agents” on this day.

Boxer punch

Artists are Fighting Mad at Google and Getty. Photographer: Diego Cervo

The decision to deactivate images is the result of perceived transgressions by Getty owned iStockphoto toward its artists over the past three years.

In September 2010, iStockphoto announced it would begin paying its contributors as little as a 15% commission while keeping the rest for themselves. Even the most successful of photographers such as Yuri Arcurs would receive no more than a 20% commission on each image downloaded.

In December 2012, it became apparent that Getty and  iStockphoto had cut a deal with Google where some contributors’ photos were used to fund the Google Images stock library under Google Drive.

In this latest slight to artists’ rights, Google announced on its blog that it was offering 5000 free stock images for use in documents, presentations, and so on. However there was no mention of where the images had come from, nor to whom the rights belonged. It turned out the images had come from Getty and iStockphoto, with little or no compensation to the artists to whom the rights belonged.

Even in cases where it could be shown that the artist received compensation for one sale, the images are being marketed by Google for free use by anyone in unlimited projects. A microstock license typically states that only one user has the right to utilize an image per sale. It is conceivable that thousands of sales per image have been lost to each artist. Further, the move by Google and Getty significantly devalued the work of the artists by putting a $0 price tag on each item.

A firestorm of angry artists took to the iStockphoto message boards in response. The debate has since spread to independent message boards such as Microstockgroup, and to the popular media.

Anger Turns to Action

While Getty is digging in its heels and putting its lawyers at the forefront of the message board debate, many artists have simply had enough of the transgressions and are now planning to do something about it.

Lisa F. Young, better known to designers as LisaFX, is upset with the deal between Google and Getty.  One of microstock’s most successful image producers, Lisa’s images have been used in numerous national advertising campaigns and featured on Late Night with David Letterman and ABC World News Tonight.

“Getty has gone too far in using our images without permission or adequate compensation.  Contributors really need to work together to send a powerful message about protecting our copyrights.  I plan to deactivate at least 500 images from Istockphoto on Feb 2 D-Day.  That will be a first step.  If Getty does not respond satisfactorily to contributor concerns, many of us will have to reconsider whether it is worthwhile to continue any business relationship with them at all, ” says Lisa.

Arguably one of the most famous stock image producers in the world, Yuri Arcurs also took his concerns to the Microstockgroup forum discussion. “Any deal that Getty is getting money in their pocket for, made possible by my (and your images), but that we do not collect a royalty on, is a scandal and deserves attention,” wrote Yuri. Arcurs started his own website, PeopleImages to sell his images direct to the public rather than watch agencies continue to devalue his work.

Founder of the Microstockgroup forums, and one of the most respected voices in microstock, Tyler Olson is also participating in the deactivation at iStockphoto. To anyone who thinks the deactivation will not make a difference, he disagrees.

“It will make a BIG difference to me and my images.  My images will no longer be licensed through an agency who is willing to let my images be given away from free.  That is the big difference I’m trying to make.  Anything more is bonus.  Having everyone remove their images on the same day may or may not raise iStock’s proverbial eyebrow but no matter what, it will save my portfolio from being given away for free.”

What Can You Do?

While contributors raise the specter of a mass image deactivation on February 2nd, they continue to wait for a reasonable answer from Google and Getty for how they intend to compensate artists for lost wages.

But you can act now.

Many stock artists have formed their own websites to offer their images, and ensure they keep the earnings rather than giving the lion’s share to agencies. By choosing to download stock images direct from these artists, you will be directly supporting the efforts of artists while taking power from mega stock agencies. The same way many of us choose to purchase our food direct from area growers at a local farmer’s market, we are now able to do the same with stock images.

We have compiled a list of known websites which offer stock images direct to the public from the artists. Our own Warmpicture Images Collective incorporates images from many artists under one umbrella, the same way a farmer’s market comprises multiple growers. We encourage you to not only begin doing business directly with these artists, but also to spread the word to other users of stock images so that the balance of power shifts away from the agencies, to the artists.

Don’t tell the kids, but it is time for designers to stock up on back to school images! Lucky for the graphic design community and bloggers, there are a plethora of low cost, high quality education based images to choose from at Warmpicture.

There are a lot of recent uploads which cover back to school and education themes. Today I’ll show you some of my favorites to help you generate ideas for your designs and layouts.

Female Student with BooksSteve Cukrov has produced some of my favorite education and back to school themed photos over the past few years. His images convey clear themes, and utilize natural looking models (including his daughter in this image).

In this image the stacked books provide a very interesting composition, while at the same time conveying the amount of work students will be facing during the school year. The lighting is soft, and even, which is perfect for stock. And there is enough copy space that a designer can put text on the image without covering the main subject matter.

Student and Teacher in Computer Lab

Edie Layland, also know under the username LaylandMasuda, brings us another natural looking education image. This time she takes us into a school computer lab where a student and teacher are working together on a modern notebook computer.

As technology continues to evolve and computer skills become even more integral as part of overall educational development, images such as this will become increasingly sought after.

Bullying and Schoo Outcasts Bullying is an unfortunate reality for school children, and has become a hot topic of discussion in America and abroad. Mandy Godbehear tackles the problem with an effective image which depicts an outcast teen girl trying to ignore the taunts of the other students.

Natural lighting is utilized here, adding to the believable atmosphere. The image is well composed and contains a great deal of copy space.

Little Girl PaintingLaylandMasuda is back with another great entry for education and back to school designs. This image features an adorable girl painting in school, with a nicely lit backdrop of class paintings hung on the wall.

This is another beautiful image which graphic designers and bloggers will appreciate for its wide range of potential uses. The very light background doubles as a possible template for copy space without covering the model.

Child in WheelchairLisaFX has one of the most extensive collections of students overcoming disabilities. This is one of our favorites for many reasons. Depicting a teen student who is confined to a wheelchair, this image shows us that students can still be active and participate in recreational activities like basketball.

The image is also expertly lit, with the subject completely isolated from a pure white background. This allows designers to easily manipulate the image by pulling out the subject and dropping him into a page layout. It also provides the ultimate flexibility for copy space, which can be added as pure white to either one of the image’s four sides.

While these images are some of our favorites, they are just a drop in the ocean of school based images available through Warmpicture. To see the entire collection, we invite you to visit our Back To School Images page. Or simply visit Warmpicture Stock Photos and type a specific keyword into the search box, or browse the education category.

We hope these images gave you some good ideas for your designs and blog posts. Feel free to give us a shout if you need help finding a specific image.

This week we will take a look at our favorite Autumn images to get you ready for the coming change of seasons!

At Warmpicture we are always amazed at the beautiful images our photographers upload. Today I want to focus on Travel Images because they rarely go out of season. At any point in the year, there is a demand among designers, bloggers, and article writers for travel photography.

Today we take a look at 10 travel photos recently uploaded to Warmpicture, and why I think these stock photos absolutely rock!

Dawn at Waikiki Beach by Jo Ann Snover

Waikiki Beach DawnJo Ann Snover’s beautiful photograph of Waikiki Beach at dawn is one of the most stunning travel photographs I have seen in a long time. I refer to this as a “postcard” style image, in that it would look great as a postcard, a framed print, or as part of an ad copy for Hawaii travel. The vibrant colors of the sky, the water, and the hotel are striking.

Summer Vacation at the Beach

Summer Beach Vacation Stock Photo While Jo Ann’s Waikiki Beach is specific, Mandy Godbehear’s Summer Beach Vacation photo is a great example of an image that has a multitude of uses. Expertly lit with a combination of warm sunlight and bounces for fill, Mandy created a beautiful composition.

The image tells a story, and it leaves important copy space for designers to personalize the photo for their own campaigns. This travel image could be used in any beach travel design or advertisement. And it could also be used in a more abstract (wiki) sense, such as a design project related to relaxation and the joys of a simple life.

Speed Driving in the Big City

Fast Driving and Bright City LightsNot all travel images need to feature a tropical location or a tranquil vista. In “Speed Driving and Big City Lights” by Katrina Brown, the essence of the city is captured in raw power. Katrina’s image was taken on the streets of Los Angeles using motion blur. However, like Mandy’s beach vacation image, Speed Driving is non-specific and will fit a wide variety of uses. This image was once featured in the cover art of a rock-and-roll CD, and could be used in a variety of designs from fast cars to city night life.

Vintage Travel Suitcase

Old Suitcase Travel Image

Danny Smythe’s very popular Vintage Travel Suitcase photo is a best seller at Warmpicture. The image does not indicate a specific travel location. Rather it tackles the topic of travel in a more generalized way.

Smythe, also known as Rimglow, created a perfect isolation of a vintage, antique suitcase complete with stickers from around the world. It is quite simply a perfect travel stock photo.

Hiking Along the Ocean

Hiking Along the OceanDiego Cervo’s ocean hiking image is a beautiful example of a travel photo that can be used for a multitude of purposes. When I look at this image, I can see beyond the obvious uses for travel photography related to nature trails, hiking, and being near the ocean.

I also see potential uses for designs related to goal setting, finding religion, getting more enjoyment out of life, and so much more.

The Republic of India is the world’s second ranked country in total population. With over 1.2 billion people at the close of 2011, it is the world’s most populous democracy.

It is also one of the fastest growing economies, hindu indian womanattracting investors from around the world. Currently the ninth largest economy (based on nominal GDP) in the world, it remains vastly under developed with a large population in poverty.  Poor public health, and challenges due to high levels of illiteracy, remain economic drags despite the immense potential.

Rich in its culture and history, India continues its rapid growth. Investors bullish on India’s future point to its abundant natural resources, reduced import tariffs, and its strong banking and financial sector.

As the Republic of India continues to grow as a world power, so too does the need for photos of India.

A Rich History

The first major civilization in India was the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished between 3300 and 1300 BCE. The country broke into disparate parts after being conquered by the Maurya Empire. After being united again in the fourth century CE under the Gupta Empire, a several century Golden Age period began shiva parvati indian paintingfor India.

Indian culture, and its religions (Buddhism and Hinduism), spread out of India throughout the Asian continent due to India’s growing influence. The religion of Islam arrived in India during the eight century, and became politically dominant by the 11th century.

India was once again conquered in the seventeenth century when the English won the battles of Plassey and Buxar. Between 1857 and 1947, the Indian rebellion fought to drive the British from India, where it once again controlled its country.

The rebellion included small Indian tribes fighting on behalf of the Japanese during World War II, while the majority of the Indian army was  under the control of the English.

Photography of India

Veteran photographer Steve Estvanik has one of the largest collections of stock photography covering the Republic of India. Steve’s travels have taken him across the country, where he visited India’s poverty stricken villages, its bustling cities, and captured in photographs its many landmarks and monuments.

Steve’s classic Taj Mahal photo as seen through a gateway arch captures the taj mahalbeauty of one of India’s most important monuments. According to Wikipedia, this jewel of Muslim art was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Constructed by thousands of artists between 1632 and 1653, the Taj Mahal was granted status as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983.

Steve Estvanik’s travels also took him to the country’s many villages where he was afforded the opportunity to photograph the true culture of India.

Estvanik’s photography brought the world the architecture and customs of India, from its religious ceremonies to its long practiced tribal dances. indian dancer woman

His photo of a classic Indian dance is licensed through many stock agencies, and is popular not only for its content but also its wonderful colors and exacting sharpness.

Warmpicture hosts thousands of images related to Indian culture, many of which were captured by Steve Estvanik.
